Slovenia | ||||||
Slovenia, a former republic of Yugoslavia, declared its independence in 1991
and managed to extricate itself from the wreckage of Titoland virtually
unscathed. Many people consider it more a part of Central Europe than the
Balkans; it lies west of the fateful boundary between the Pannonian plain
and the central uplands that became the border between the eastern and
western halves of the Roman Empire 1,500 years ago and has been a zone of
conflict ever since. I visited Slovenia in 1976 and remember Ljubljana, the
capital, as a charming, low-rise city. I imagine it has changed a great
deal.
